5 things to do to manage Kidney Functions

The kidney has a very vital role to play in our body. They remove the waste and byproducts of metabolism. Any shortcoming of this function leads to chronic renal failure . It is therefore important to ensure proper kidney health.

In the event of minor kidney dysfunction it is sometimes possible to eliminate the cause of renal failure, if the renal function does not deteriorate any further. It is possible to handle kidney issues if there is any minor kidney damage or kidney damage symptoms . The less tissue of the healthy kidneys has been lost, the greater the chance ofkidney disease prevention and the easier it is for kidneys to continue to function adequately. A healthy human kidney have a great reserve capacity and can recover from minor kidney problems. Therefore, it is usually not much of an issue if the renal function slows down a little with aging since even half functioning kidneys can fulfill their tasks.Unfortunately, it might also lead to chronic renal failure.

Renal Failure

When kidney tissues are affected by a disease, it could affect renal corpuscles with the associated renal tubules. In such a situation the rest of the kidneys could find it very hard to get the job done. IF there is not enough healthy tissues left, it leads to kidney infection, kidney diseases or kidney problems. We often find a gradual worsening of an injury of the kidneys and if it worsens to a stage where only 5 to 10% of the renal tissue are functioning, it could be a severe renal failure.Kidney failure treatment in this situation is very important.

Dialysis and kidney transplantation, are the common solutions suggested for a patient’s chronic kidney disease. In the case of kidney transplant the patient has to get used to live with one kidney to prevent kidney failure in its entirety.

The main goal of any kidney treatment is to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and delay kidney damage.

There are different stages of kidney failure. However, various kidney function tests like KFT, serum creatinine, GFR etc can confirm the disease stage.

STAGE 1 WITH NORMAL OR HIGH GFR>90Ml/MIN
STAGE 2 MILD CKD GFR=60-80 ml/min
STAGE 3 A MODERATE CKD GFR=30-44ml/min
STAGE 4 SEVERE CKD GFR=15-29min/ml
STAGE 5 END STAGE CKD GFR>15ml/min

Causes of Kidney damage

There could be different causes of kidney failure . the most common causes are

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Renal insufficiency (glomerulonephritis)
  • High blood pressure
  • Family history
  • Heart problems or stroke
  • >60yrs
  • obesity
  • Seizures and infections of the urinary tract
  • Familial cystitis
  • Use of large amounts of different painkillers
  • Tumors etc.

Detecting Kidney Disease

There are several ways to detect kidney disease at an early stage.

Some of the symptoms and accompanying conditions include high pressure, tiredness, lack of concentration, sleep, dry and itchy skin, frequent urination, blood in urine, persistent puffiness around the eyes and diabetes mellitus. In fact diabetic kidney disease is caused by diabetes that damages the kidneys leading to acute renal failure many times.

Kidney pain can occur as a result of kidney function impairment. The reason for kidney paincould be UTIs, kidney stones, and blunt force trauma to the kidneys. There could be back pain across the entire back, but most people experience pain in the lower back. As a result of kidney problems, back pain may be felt but this is different from normal back pain and therefore any kidney pain treatment would need to consider this as well.

Other kidney diseases include CKD, PKD,nephrotic syndrome , renal calculi

  •  Renal Caculi(kidney stone) include pain during urination, blood in the urine, sharp pain in the back or lower abdomen and nausea and vomiting the overwhelming presence of more crystal-forming substances — such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid — in the urine than the fluid in the urine can dilute.PKD or polycystic kidney disease is an inherited disorder that causes the kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time.
  • CKD or chronic kidney disease is diagnosed if the patient has abnormalities of kidney function or structure present for more than 3 months. GFR (glomerular filtration rate)tests -two tests taken at least 90 days apart – are used to identify CKD stages.
  • A kidney cyst is a round pouch of smooth, thin-walled tissue usually filled with fluid and is usually harmless.

Kidney Disease Prevention

To prevent kidney failure diet is one of the important things to take care of. A balanced diet with adequate nutrients, vitamins, proteins and minerals needed by the body is prescribed while we should also take care to avoid excess protein levels. This will increase the burden on the kidney. In addition to this we should also drink adequate quantity of water, exercise regularly and be careful in the use of prescription chemical drugs.

Ayurveda and Kidney Disease

Ayurveda considers disease triggers in the body being caused by the blockage of certain specific channels named Doshas. Ayurveda uses herbs in the treatment of kidney disease to eliminate any kind of kidney damage signs and revives the damaged kidney cells. They provide long-lasting cure for the disease and bring about an overall positive effect on the body, without any side-effects.Some of the important herbs used in Ayurveda are Punarnava (Boerhaviadiffusa), Kaasni (Cichoriumintybus), Varun (Crataevanurvala), Gokshur (Tribulusterrestris), Palaash (Butea monosperma) and RaktChandan (Pterocarpussantalinus).
